Sungkyunkwan University pulls off a thrilling upset over Kyung Hee University to move into fifth place.

Sungkyunkwan University won 70-60 against Kyung Hee University in the 2023 KUSF University Basketball U-League at Suseong Hall on Sungkyunkwan University’s Natural Science Campus on Monday.

With the win, Sungkyunkwan improved to 6-6 on the season with a 5.5 percent winning percentage, tied for fifth place with Kookmin University and Hanyang University. Conversely, Kyung Hee University fell to 5-7 with the loss and dropped to eighth place.

Park Jong-ha had 19 points and four rebounds and Won Jun-seok had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Sungkyunkwan University to victory.

Kyung Hee University was led by Ahn Se-joon with 14 points and Kim Seo-won with 13 points, but was unable to turn the tide in the third quarter.

The game was fiercely contested from the first quarter. Kyung Hee University attacked the basket with Ahn Se-joon, while Lee Seung-goo also made active moves to get free throws and contribute to the scoring. Sungkyunkwan University countered with a basket by Won Jun-seok and a mid-range shot by Min Ki-nam, breaking the seesaw game. The first quarter ended with Sungkyunkwan University narrowly ahead, 17-16.

The flow was similar in the second quarter. There was no significant run by either team. In the middle of the quarter, Kyung Hee University took the lead with back-to-back three-pointers from Lee Seung-gu. Just before the end of the quarter, Kyung Hee University extended its lead with a basket by Kim Soo-oh. However, Sungkyunkwan University fought back with an end-to-end play by Park Jong-ha, and the first half ended with Kyung Hee University holding a slim 35-32 lead.

In the third quarter, Sungkyunkwan University started to fight back. Sungkyunkwan University turned the game around by scoring on a quick counterattack after a successful defense. However, Sungkyunkwan University’s defense effectively prevented Kyung Hee University from scoring more points, and with 1:40 left in the game, Park Jong-ha hit a wedge to make it 65-57, effectively deciding the game.
