Women’s World Cup quarter-final draw confirmed
Colombia-France last 16… ‘bloodbath’ from 11th day
‘Powerhouses’ US, Germany and Norway eliminated
The quarter-finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia-New Zealand 2023 have been drawn after South Korea’s early exit from the tournament.
Colombia defeated Jamaica 1-0 in the round of 16 at Rectangular Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, on 8 August. Jamaica, who were drawn in a group with France and Brazil, overcame Brazil to reach the last 16, but could not get past the next hurdle. France reached the quarter-finals with a 4-0 thrashing of Morocco on the same day.
This completes the quarter-final draw of Spain (6th) – Netherlands (9th), Japan (11th) – Sweden (3rd), England (4th) – Colombia (25th), Australia (10th) – France (5th). Five of the eight nations were represented by UEFA, while Japan and Australia defended their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) honours. Colombia is the only South American side to reach the quarter-finals.
Reaching the quarter-finals for the first time in Women’s World Cup history, Colombia have been one of the surprise stories of the tournament. Colombia topped Group H with back-to-back wins over South Korea (ranked 17th) and Germany (ranked second) to reach the round of 16, where they also defeated another dark horse, Jamaica.바카라사이트
The tournament was full of upsets, with Japan the only country in the quarter-finals to have won a World Cup before. Japan last won the tournament in 2011 in Germany. The United States, the four-time defending champions and the first nation to win three consecutive Women’s World Cup titles, were brought to their knees in the round of 16 with a penalty shootout loss to Sweden. Two-time champions Germany didn’t even make it out of the group stage after being held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea in their final Group H match. Norway (one time) packed their bags first, losing 1-3 to Japan in the round of 16.
The Japanese, who have been unbeaten since the group stage, led by top scorer Miyazaka Hinata (five goals), will play Sweden, who beat defending champions USA on 11 November, for a place in the last four. European giants Spain will look to reach the last four for the first time when they take on defending champions Netherlands on the same day, while co-hosts Australia face France and Colombia host England for a place in the semi-finals on the 12th.
