Dante Cunningham’s choice was LG. He also received offers from European League teams, but decided to continue his career in the KBL.
The Changwon LG officially announced the signing of Cunningham on the club’s official social media on Wednesday. With the signing, LG will continue the Asem Marei and Cunningham combination that worked so well last season for the 2023-2024 season.
Cunningham, a former NBA player, came to the KBL in his late 30s. He started all 54 games last season as LG’s second option, averaging 8.5 points and 5.1 rebounds in 15 minutes. His style is different from Marais’, as he’s more involved in the fast break, helping LG showcase different combinations. He also helped lift the team’s spirits with his spectacular dunks.
Cunningham was unable to re-sign with LG by the deadline for foreign players to re-sign with the organization. LG offered him a new contract, but he was cautious, saying, “I think I need to think about it a little bit more.”
The decision was difficult on two fronts. An LG representative said of Cunningham, “He wanted to spend time with his child because he hadn’t been able to spend much time with him. He also received offers from teams in the European League. He had to decide between retirement and signing with a team in the European League.”
Cunningham chose LG after a lengthy courtship. “We made it clear that we wanted to stay together. They told us that we could always bring our families to Korea if we needed to, and that they would help us settle in. We asked them to give us time to think about it, but we are grateful that we finally signed the contract.”먹튀검증
With the signing, LG can continue its quest for its first championship. In Cho’s first season as head coach, LG finished second in the regular season and reached the quarterfinals before falling short in the championship game. LG enters the new season with a mix of foreign players, having added free agent Yang Hong-seok in the offseason to bolster its weak forward lineup.
